Premier Leadership Is The Focus
For FFA Students
The ability
to influence and motivate others towards
accomplishing a common goal is a quality and
skill that is vital in today’s society. For
Atwater High School FFA students Terilyn
Bettencourt and Nikki Schiber, the opportunity
to serve others, represent an organization they
believe in, and expand and develop those
leadership skills beneficial in today’s society
is what drives them individually towards
academic and personal success.
Over 65,000
high school students are enrolled in California
high school agricultural education programs and
the FFA serves as the leadership component.
“Getting students involved beyond the classroom
represents one of the main goals within our
agriculture department,” says AHS agriculture
instructor and FFA advisor Beth Knapp, “We find
that students that are involved do better
socially and academically.”
This past
weekend, six FFA students representing the
Merced-Mariposa FFA Section attended an annual
officer retreat at Lake McClure. The six
officers represent the eleven high school
agriculture programs within Merced and Mariposa
counties. The purpose of the trip was to plan
the calendar, identify goals, and team building.
“Serving as a sectional officer gives us the
opportunity to expand, represent, and serve a
larger group of students,” said Atwater FFA
member Nikki Schiber, “I hope to continue my
leadership opportunities within the FFA in years
to come.”
Members of
the 2009-2010 FFA Merced-Mariposa Sectional
Officer Team are Olivia Baker (Golden Valley FFA),
Richard Ballinger (Mariposa FFA), Terilyn
Bettencourt (Atwater FFA), Eric Migliazzo (Buhach
Colony FFA) Megen Morales (Buhach Colony FFA),
and Nikki Schiber (Atwater FFA).
FFA
provides students with numerous opportunities to
experience premier leadership, personal growth
and academic success through agricultural
education. For more information on how your
son/daughter can get involved, contact your
local high school agriculture program or log
